Playhouse Party!

The team of staff and volunteers gathers in front of the Ever After House after a great party!

On Friday, July 20, the Education Department held the Grand Opening for our brand new addition to Playhouse Lane. The "Ever After House," donated by Bank of Fayette County and Salvaggio Group, is a two-story, thatched-roof cottage nestled in the northwest corner of My Big Backyard. The cottage, decked in fresh cedar branches that will gradually turn brown, is perfectly set against a background of ancient cherry trees; the landscaping resembles a large chessboard.

As children step through the rough-hewn cedar doors, they are transported to a world of stories and folk tales. Scenes from such classics as Snow White, Little Red Riding Hood, and Hansel & Gretel adorn the walls, and a small library of storybooks waits on the shelves to be explored. Costumes and a "magic mirror" help complete the atmosphere of this delightful and unique new playhouse.

The twilight party that helped dedicate the Ever After House took place up and down Playhouse Lane and had the feel of a block party. From 6:00 to 8:00, children ran from one house to another, participating in crafts and dress-up at each one, as parents strolled along in tow. In the Guest House, the hors d'ouvres took on the theme of each house - with Fairy Pillows (mini marshmallows), Country Veggies & dip, "Snow White's Apples" with caramel, Jack's Magic Beans, Finder's Keepers trail mix, and "Rockin Refreshments" in the form of customized soft drinks.

Of course, the element that makes all our events truly remarkable is the help of volunteers, and this party was no different! We were fortunate to have people from Volunteer Mid-South participate, but we also received three very special volunteers. Kristen, Tasha and Alzay came to us by way of the Great American Service Trip, a coast-to-coast roadtrip that had taken them through 11 states and over 18 service projects. We were their last stop before their return to Atlanta, GA, but they remained in top form as they played with the kids and led them through the crafts and activities.

Thanks to everyone who made this party an unbelievable success despite the hot weather, and we hope to see you in August for the Firefly Glow Party!
