The Garden thrives through the time and energy of our volunteers!
We offer a variety of volunteer opportunities to suit your interests, skill level, and schedule.
These include seasonal and year-round Horticultural Volunteer opportunities for gardeners of all abilities and interests…from novice to expert…from occasional garden clean-ups to weekly chores. Volunteering with our horticulture department gives you the chance to work hands on in one or more of our beautiful garden areas, and our horticulture staff enjoy the opportunity to share their knowledge and experience with others who have a love of nature. Our hope is that people become more aware of plants and their importance to our environment, while at the same time helping us maintain our 96-acre garden as a showcase for horticulture and education.
The Garden is also looking for Volunteer Docents
, who will receive training from various staff members to become knowledgeable about each of our specialty garden areas. Docents will lead group tours of the Garden and/or work as Garden guides during special events. This is a perfect opportunity to teach our community about the beauty of nature! If you are a teacher or long to be one someday, this is a great spot for you! Walking tours of the Garden can cover up to all 96 acres of our gardens, or may focus on areas of particular interest to a tour group...either way, it can be great exercise and lots of fun!
Each fall and winter, our staff decorate our Grounds and Visitors Center for Snowy Nights and holiday events. This means we need lots of elves for our Holiday Build and Design Team. Dates and times for these tasks are based on your availability, and we will work around your schedule! Engineers, Carpenters, Programmers and DIY types PLEASE APPLY...we have special tasks that need your attention!
Hosting a world-class family garden like My Big Backyard takes a lot of time and attention, which means that we have countless opportunities for Children's Garden Volunteers. There are opportunities to assist in the Children's Garden every day of the week, including:
- Greeters - Stationed at the entrance to My Big Backyard, Greeters welcome families and scheduled school groups to the garden, answer frequently-asked questions, and share the information and guidelines needed to ensure that all visitors have a wonderful experience.
- Gardeners - Our Gardener volunteers make a hands-on contribution to the beautification of My Big Backyard. Gardeners coordinate with our Horticulture Department on the specific needs of the garden. There is always something to do!
- Play and Learn Supporters (PALS) - Lend a hand with a variety of activities throughout My Big Backyard! PALS can share information, make new friends, and facilitate play with special toys and props designed for use in specific parts of the garden.
- Educators - With a broad range of children’s education programming in My Big Backyard, Educators are needed during the week, on weekends, and for special evening events. Experience in education is helpful but not required; all you need is a passion for teaching or leading activities.
In addition to the above opportunities, we welcome your assistance in your area of expertise. To match your interests and skills with our needs, please submit the request form below and our staff will contact you. To reach us by phone, call Daisy Winkel at 901-636-4102.
